Candaba
The Wetland Sanctuary of the Philippines
Our Beginnings
Candaba is one of the oldest and most ecologically diverse settlements in Luzon. Historically, it was the center of a powerful pre-colonial polity that controlled the inland waterways and fertile wetlands. During the rainy season, the vast Candaba Swamps transform into a massive lake, which ancient settlers utilized for fishing and travel. In the dry season, the land becomes some of the most fertile agricultural soil in the country, producing high-yield crops. It has long been a haven for migratory birds from as far as Siberia and Japan, making it a globally recognized site for biodiversity.
The town’s history is also marked by its revolutionary spirit, providing refuge for guerilla forces during various conflicts due to its difficult-to-navigate wetlands. Today, it stands as a unique ecological sanctuary, balancing its role as the 'rice granary' with its modern identity as a birdwatcher’s paradise.
The Candaba Lifestyle
Life in Candaba is dictated by the rhythm of the seasons. It offers a unique 'wilderness' lifestyle that is increasingly rare in modern Pampanga. The town is the ultimate escape for wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and those who seek the peaceful solitude of the wetlands. For the locals, life is a blend of sustainable farming and eco-tourism. A typical day involves harvesting freshwater fish or tending to the rice fields under the watchful eye of the migratory egrets. It is a town that values space, silence, and the delicate balance of nature.
