Apalit
The Ironwork Capital & Home of the Libad
Our Beginnings
Apalit’s history is inextricably bound to the Rio Grande de Pampanga. Founded in 1590, it became the industrial heart of the south, famous for its blacksmiths (*Panday*) who produced the finest agricultural tools and weapons in the region. The town’s location along the river made it a strategic naval and commercial point, facilitating trade between the central plains and Manila Bay. It is the site of the legendary 'Libad'—a massive river procession honoring St. Peter (Apung Iru) that has drawn thousands of devotees for over a century.
The town’s craftsmanship extended beyond iron to weaving and kakanin production. Historically, the Apalit-built riverboats were the primary means of transport for Kapampangan elites, while its blacksmiths provided the tools that cleared the vast sugar estates of the north.
The Apalit Lifestyle
Life in Apalit is vibrant, industrious, and deeply community-oriented. It is a town that works hard and celebrates even harder. The lifestyle revolves around the river and the market, where the famous 'Apalit Kakanin' is traded daily. For a visitor, the town offers a raw, authentic look at Kapampangan river culture—from visiting the old iron workshops to witnessing the spectacular Libad festival. It is a town of master craftsmen and hardworking entrepreneurs, offering a lifestyle that is grounded in tradition but fueled by modern trade.
