Fishing in Pampanga

Cast your line in Candaba's wetlands, fishponds, and rivers—from recreational angling to traditional bamboo fishing with local guides.

Where Rice Fields Meet Rivers

Pampanga's fishing scene is as diverse as its landscape. From the vast wetlands of Candaba where locals cast nets for mudfish and tilapia, to private fishponds stocked with bangus and hito, to the winding Pampanga River where you can catch native species while watching the sun set over rice paddies—there's something therapeutic about fishing in Central Luzon's waters.

This isn't sport fishing in the Western sense—there are no salmon or trout here. Instead, you're fishing for tilapia, bangus (milkfish), hito (catfish), dalag (mudfish), and other freshwater species that locals have been catching for generations. The experience is less about trophy catches and more about patience, quiet mornings, and connecting with the rhythms of rural life. Many visitors combine fishing with cultural immersion—learning traditional techniques from Aeta or Kapampangan fishermen, cooking your catch over open fires, or simply enjoying the peace of being on the water.

Candaba Wetlands & Fishponds

Fish the same waters where migratory birds feed—traditional bamboo fishing in the Philippines' most important wetland ecosystem.

The Experience:

Candaba's 32,000-hectare wetland system isn't just for birdwatchers—it's been sustaining local fishing communities for centuries. During the dry season (October-May), when water levels drop and migratory birds arrive, locals fish the shallow ponds and channels using traditional methods: bamboo traps, cast nets, and simple rod-and-line setups. You can join them, either as a spectator learning about wetland ecology or as an active participant casting your own line.

The most popular fishing spots are the private fishponds managed by local families—particularly the areas around Barangay Doña Simang where the famous bird sanctuary is located. Here, you can arrange half-day or full-day fishing experiences through local guides. You'll fish for tilapia, hito (catfish), dalag (mudfish), and sometimes bangus. The setting is stunning: vast open skies, flocks of egrets and herons overhead, and the peaceful rhythm of casting and waiting while sitting on bamboo platforms above the water.

Target Species: Tilapia • Hito (Catfish) • Dalag (Mudfish) • Bangus (Milkfish) • Ayungin (Silver Perch)
Fishing Methods:
  • Rod & Reel Fishing: Traditional setup with simple bamboo poles or basic spinning rods—bring your own or rent locally
  • Net Fishing: Learn to throw cast nets (lambat) like the locals—requires skill but very effective
  • Trap Fishing: Help set and check bamboo fish traps (bubo)—traditional method still used today
  • Boat Fishing: Fish from traditional bangka boats while navigating shallow channels
Best Time to Fish:

Dry Season (November-May): Best fishing conditions—lower water levels concentrate fish, cooler mornings, access easier.
Early Morning (5-9 AM): Peak feeding time for most species—bring coffee and enjoy the sunrise.
Late Afternoon (3-6 PM): Second feeding window—beautiful golden hour light for photos.

What to Bring:
  • Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen (minimal shade on fishponds)
  • Light long-sleeved shirt (sun protection)
  • Insect repellent (mosquitoes near water)
  • Water and snacks
  • Cooler if you want to keep your catch
  • Camera for birds and scenery
  • Cash for guide fees and fish purchases
🍽️ Cook Your Catch: Many fishing guides can arrange for your catch to be cleaned and cooked on-site—freshly grilled tilapia with vinegar dip is a Kapampangan classic. Or ask them to recommend nearby restaurants that will cook your fish.
